Rafif chose the word الحياة which means "life" in arabic. Rafif is 11 years old and has a whole life ahead of her. She hopes that somehow it will be good, and that Palestinians will be able to live in peace. She doesn't know what that will look like but she wants it badly. I tried putting all those positive vibes into my peice by adding some movement and energy. I've known Rafif for a year and a half and she's just so sweet and generous with everyone. Mahmood chose the word "قدوة" which means "exemple" . His word is dedicated to his father who is an exemple to him and his siblings. His father, Abu Ahmed works hard to provide for his 6 children and does everything he can to send them to university, hoping that their future will be outside the refugee camp. But on top of this he has always been very clear with his kids, forbidding them to get anywhere near guns, makeshift bombs and M16s. It's the second time I'm working in Balata Refugee Camp and the fact that I know so many people here makes me feel at home. I know the streets, the shops, I know who makes the best home-made lemonade and the people here know that I don't want an arabic dose of sugar in my tea! The inhabitants of the camp have taught me so much about human resilience, about what an ongoing conflict does to people, and of course they've taught me more arabic!
